There are a lot of big boats that you probably don’t know yet. If you’ve known oil tankers to be the biggest among them, you might be surprised that there are even bigger ones. Oil tankers are big ships because they are created to carry many containers of oil and deliver them to different countries all over the world. But there’s still a kind of ship that carry bigger, heavier and more voluminous objects.

Imagine a transport carrying another transport in numbers. This is the work and main purpose of an aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier is designed to transport aircraft from one country to another through the sea. Aircraft is any transport that uses the atmosphere as means of transit such as planes, jets and helicopters.

A plane itself is already massive but an aircraft carrier is designed with the capacity to bear even a number of it. This carrier was originally used to carry jets and planes that Americans needed during World War II. And today, it is still a useful ship both for the country’s national defense and for transporting commercial aircrafts.

Carrying massive objects, aircraft carriers undergo strict inspection and testing that sometimes take years just to guarantee the strength, installation of electric and fuel systems, stability, handling, and suitability for use of the ship.

It may not be a recreational craft but it still undergoes strict quality control comparable to Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) that European countries observe in manufacturing their boats. RCD, however, only focuses on recreational boats.

On the other hand, there are aircraft carriers that are not only made for carrying aircraft. Some of them are designed to carry submarines, medium-size boats like import trawler yachts and even amphibious assault boats. Many other vehicles or any form of transport can be loaded to this carrier as long as it is under tolerable mass.

In the future, new and bigger ships are expected to be invented. And while advancement is unstoppable, quality control measures like the Recreational Craft Directive must also evolve with it. In this way, catastrophes due to ineffective carriers which have been a popular problem in ocean transportation will be lessened, if not totally avoided.
